Private Residence
Area 24 m²
The traditional ‘katikiá’, a classic typology of the region, is located in a central spot within the settlement of Naousa and is over 100 years old. The interior surface area of the residence is 24 m². Its construction follows the conventional building methods of the past, featuring stone masonry approximately 60 cm thick and a flat roof built from lentisk wood beams, reeds, seaweed for insulation, and a top layer of mud plaster. Essentially, it is an ecological construction method.
After decades of abandonment, significant deterioration had occurred in various parts of the house. Our intervention began with the load-bearing structure: the masonry was repaired wherever necessary, and the flat roof was replaced with a new one made of reinforced concrete.
Inside the house, the space was left open-plan, with the intention that future furnishings would define different zones. Only the bathroom area was separated—a vertical zone on the northwest side — enclosed with a metal framework and glass panels. Existing openings were preserved, as were the original internal window frames.
A skylight was introduced in the ceiling to enhance natural lighting. In a future vertical extension, this skylight is designed to be removed and replaced by a staircase that will provide access to the new floor.
